Find Sexual Harassment Attorney  By Chris Welsh

What was once a nameless form of abuse shrouded in a cloud of doubt and uncertainty has become a household term. Sexual harassment, in the most commonly understood form of the term, generally occurs at the workplace, and involves one party making offensive comments or conducting themselves offensively to another party in an inappropriate manner. Sexual harassment attorneys may not be as common a household idea because most workplaces have since put effective procedures in place to deal with the issue when it arises. In some cases, however, protecting a person's rights necessitates taking matters beyond the work place and into a court of law.

Speaking Up

Even with increased attention on the problem and growing resolutions put in place, many people feel they are in a helpless situation. They may not even be certain that what they are experiencing qualifies as sexual harassment, or they might be afraid to take action. The first thing a person should do when confronted with this problem is to speak up and speak out. Confront the person who is behaving offensively and explain that his or her actions offend you -- he might not even be aware of it. Even if he is doing it intentionally, he can no longer use the defense of being ignorant of the problem.

Reporting It

Your workplace will likely have a procedure for dealing with sexual harassment. Becoming familiar with and following the procedure is the next step you should take (if speaking with the offender did not put an end to the behavior). Most likely you will need to report the problem to a designated person or your supervisor. If your supervisor is the problem, going up the chain of command is the next step to take.

Consulting an Attorney

Even while you are following company procedure and speaking to the offending party, you should be recording what is happening, and on which dates. If you try all the steps your company recommends, and the problem remains unresolved, you will be adequately prepared when you take the next step -- contacting a sexual harassment attorney.
