Find Internet Attorney  By Kiersten Brazier

With the ever-increasing popularity of the Internet has come a multitude of legal issues. Internet law involves everything from patent and copyright law to defamation suits. Because much of the law regarding the internet is constantly changing and poorly defined, it is important to consult a lawyer who not only practices in the area you need, such as a patent attorney or a litigator, but who also specializes in Internet law.

What Is Internet Law?

Frequently referred to as cyber law, Internet law is any aspect of the law that can be applied to the internet. Because so much business is being done on the Internet, nearly every aspect of the law can be applied to cyber law in some form. The most common areas in which Internet law attorneys specialize are patents, copyrights, and intellectual property, business, contracts, and litigation. However, there are other aspects of Internet law as well. Many law firms that have a traditional practice in one of the aforementioned areas have branched out to become Internet law experts in their fields as well.

How Do I Know if I Need an Internet Law Attorney?

If you have a legal issue concerning the Internet or software associated with computers, you should consult an attorney with Internet law experience. Because many areas that are normally well-defined (for instance, contract law) become much more complicated when transferred to the Internet, consulting an attorney is the best course of action. Other reasons why you may need a cyber law attorney include litigation revolving around online defamation, domain name disputes, and copyright issues.

How Do I Find an Internet Law Attorney?

One excellent way to find a cyber law attorney is by searching online. Since these firms regularly deal with the Internet, it is likely that they will have informative and helpful Web sites. Additionally, you can contact local firms specializing in what you need and ask about their Internet law experience. Since this is a fairly new area of the law, and not really taught in most law schools, you will want to choose an attorney with plenty of experience dealing with Internet cases. If they have been working with Internet cases for several years, they will have the knowledge necessary to represent you. However, you will want to choose an attorney that is qualified outside of Internet law as well. For example, if you have a patent issue, only a licensed patent attorney is qualified to take your case—regardless of the fact that it is an Internet case.

Because Internet law is a new and growing area of the law, finding qualified attorneys is getting easier. Eventually, most attorneys will need to be at least somewhat versed in Internet law protocol. Until then, choose an attorney with extensive experience. He or she will be able to help you quickly and efficiently resolve your legal issues with the Internet.
